GH¢1,500 for footballers: ‘We have done the analysis’ – NDC replies ‘doubting’ Gabby
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said its campaign promise to pay local football if elected into office on December 7, 2020, is backed by sound analysis.
NDC Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, said as part of the policy proposal, any Premier League Club in need of financial assistance will be able to apply for funds to remunerate its players.
“As it has been the case for every other policy proposal contained in the NDC’s Peoples’ Manifesto, we have done the analysis and we know how much this social intervention will cost the nation and how we intend to fund it when elected,” Sammy Gyamfi said in a statement.
The NDC Communications Officer was reacting to a social media post by a member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Asare Darko, which sought to mock the NDC promise as impossible.
Sammy Gyamfi had stated earlier that the NDC plans to pay at least GH¢1,500 monthly allowances to all players in Ghana’s elite league.
Aside from the payment of allowances to the players, Sammy Gyamfi says the NDC will also establish a sports development fund which they will use to cater for all investments in the sports industry.
But in the Facebook post by Mr Otchere-Darko he wrote: “A world first! Professional footballers to be added to government payroll in case John Mahama wins. I hope the mathematicians are adding up the costs to you the taxpayers. The truth is: you and I know they don’t mean it!”
But in a sharp rebuttal, Sammy Gyamfi said “Did I hear the Nephew of President Akufo-Addo and Ghana’s De facto Prime Minister, Gabby Otchere Darko suggest that this laudable policy is not doable? For the records, the legal fees paid to Gabby Otchere Darko and his cronies under the stinking ‘Agyapa deal’ alone can pay for this policy over a period of four years, not to talk of the unprecedented waste of public funds we are witnessing under the obese and corrupt Akufo Addo-government.”
